Tips for Homestay
Race
Canadian law does not allow discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, marriage or gender. Four out of every ten Canadians are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Therefore, our staff cannot deliberately arrange for you to stay with a white Canadian family, and students cannot request to change the host family based on the race of the host family.
Family composition
The Canadian population is aging. One third of marriages end in divorce; unmarried couples living together have the same legal status as married couples. As a result, families are diverse, ranging from divorced single-parent families with children to single men, single women, unmarried couples, or elderly couples.
Semi-basement
Semi-basements are very common in Canadian residential structures. They are warm in winter and cool in summer, which is very different from basements in China. Therefore, the conditions for students living in basements are not as bad as we imagine. In addition, semi-basements are often on slopes, which means that the ground is still flat when you walk out of the door. And there are large enough windows to ensure ventilation and lighting. If you refuse semi-basements, you will miss a lot of excellent host families.
